Jack B Yeats: Drawings & Illustrations

Curator's Welcome

Welcome to Jack B. Yeats: Drawings and Illustrations, an exhibit of material from Falvey Memorial Library Special Collections. Within Special Collections, the McGarrity Collection, First Editions and Limited Editions contain numerous works by and about the Yeats family.

This exhibit focuses on the drawings and illustrations of Jack B. Yeats found in Special Collections. It also highlights the historical backdrop of Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century, as well as Jack's involvement with his sister's publishing company, Cuala Press.

In Falvey's Special Collections, Jack's drawings are found in children's book, novels, plays, and broadsides. One of the highlights of the collection is A Broadside. Jack was the editor of the first series and provided over 250 drawings. While a handful of issues are discussed here, the complete first series is available online through the Digital Library.

Jack Butler Yeats

Jack B. YeatsJack B. Yeats was born in London in 1871. He spent his childhood in Sligo, Ireland, an experience that would influence his life's work. His career spanned a variety of occupations, working as an illustrator and cartoonist for various newspapers, moving on to watercolor and oil. His depictions of daily life in the west of Ireland, illustrated initially in A Broadside and later depicted in oil contributed to Ireland's growing nationalist sentiment at a turbulent time in Irish history.

Jack was also the author of plays, novels, and children’s books. His style evolved over the course of his career moving from realism to more abstract expressionism. Returning to Ireland in 1910, he lived in the Dublin area until his death in 1957.
